ORKNEY

How did she get there from Cowes?

Story of the voyage?

Who was the first owner? (Hugh Birley, Sheep farmer?)

Apparently he also owned a Zulu class ex fishing boat?

What happened to her in those years?

How / Why did she end up in Scrabster harbour in the late 70s or was it this mystery boat instead

How did she end up back in the South of England?

The Fairbairns bought her out of Orkney and their story is yet to be told.

The Genesis Factor

Porpoise 44 (look familiar?

Vagabond 47

Could it be that Pertelote was the Genesis factor for well known names such as Porpoise 44, Vagabond 47, Hardin 45, Force 50 and Bounty 44? (There may be many more).

Ernest Chamberlain, an Englishman, went to Taiwan in the 60s, and started BLUE WATER YACHT BUILDERS in the North of the Island.

He had visited the Baylis's, prevous owners of Pertelote, and told them that he had many pictures of Pertelote on the walls of his office.

Ernest built several PORPOISE ketches in teak before deciding to build in fiberglass. This version was lengthened from 44 to 47 feet on deck, and re-named the VAGABOND.Ernest Chamberlain, an Englishman, arrived in Taiwan at about that time, and started BLUE WATER YACHT BUILDERS in the North of the Island. Ernest built several more PORPOISE ketches in teak before deciding to build in fiberglass. This version was lengthened from 44 to 47 feet on deck, and re-named the VAGABOND.

Bill Hardin, Bill Crealock, Ernest Chamberlain and William Garden were the pioneers of Taiwan yacht building for the US market and realy got the industry rolling in the late 60s and 70s.
